From Squatters’ Quarters to Stunning
It was once a dark, dilapidated ruin of a house occupied by squatters but a top-to-toe renovation by Nexus Home Improvements has completed transformed this 80s brick house into an elegant, inviting family home.
Abandoned by its former owner, the Cannington house had fallen into an immense state of disrepair and was in a shocking state when owners Craig and Claire bought it at a bank auction seven years ago.
“When we bought the house it was dark and derelict with squatters living in it,” said Craig of the two-storey, dark brick home. “All the windows were broken or boarded up and it looked like someone had taken to all the walls with a baseball bat. But I could visualise how the home could look in the future.”
Following a friend’s recommendation, Craig and Claire approached Nexus Home Improvements to ask them to turn the house into a comfortable, modern family home for themselves and their four children.
After bad experiences with other builders and tradespeople in the past, Craig said he and Claire were pleasantly surprised by the Nexus team.
“I’ve dealt with so many builders who have been disappointing – people who don’t turn up, who drink and smoke in the house, who swear around the kids,” he said. “Matthew has been the only one I get along with – he is respectful, tidy, professional and always on time. I fully recommend him and his team; they are all nice, professional guys with great attitudes.”
Craig said he felt he could put his full trust in Nexus.
“Matthew is honest – he and his team can be trusted to work inside my home anytime without me needing to be present,” he said.
As instructors in family-orientated mixed martial arts, Craig and Clare love Asian culture and wanted their home to reflect this with Asian and Balinese influences. A palette of luxurious, natural finishes including marble, travertine, granite, sandstone and lava rock pavers gives the home an elegant, exotic feel while feature recesses were built to showcase treasured family possessions picked up on overseas travels.
When the family moved in the home was in such a poor state that every room needed to be gutted and redone yet Craig said Nexus made the effort to ensure the family of six could live in the home while the extensive renovations went on.
“It got pretty messy sometimes but we lived upstairs for a while and it was fine,” he said.
“The Nexus team goes to extreme measures to cover and protect everything from dust and damage and clean up, sweep and vacuum properly after each day’s work, which I have found is uncommon with other tradespeople.”
Claire said the team tried to make sure the family was always happy. “Even when they had to come out to work at six o’clock in the morning they were quiet. They’re a really great group of guys – nothing is a problem.”
All bedrooms were rejuvenated with new windows, flooring, robes and paint treatments and the exterior rendered and fitted with new doors. The open-plan kitchen, living and dining has become the heart of the home with granite floors and feature ceilings with uplighting. Nexus completely landscaped the outdoor areas, transforming them from sandpits into tropical courtyard gardens with Balinese-style thatched gazebos, lava rock paving and stone and timber accents against backdrops of lush bamboo planted to create privacy screens.
A standout room is the ground floor bathroom. Inspired by elements from numerous boutique hotel bathrooms, the bathroom is fully tiled in travertine with a marble benchtop to the vanity, an open shower, a deep bath by the window and recessed feature nooks for tealights.
The upper floor was turned into a true parents’ getaway with a Balinese feel. A private study was created off the landing and a flow-on ensuite added to the bedroom. The bedroom opens up onto a new spacious decked balcony that overlooks the lush tropical gardens. The balcony is now Claire’s favourite spot in the home to relax. “I love everything about this house, but we spend most of our time in the bedroom and on the balcony,” she said. “We go away on holiday now and can’t wait to get home.”
These photos show the stunning transformations that Nexus Home Improvements can bring to your home and lifestyle – and all in just a fraction of the time, and with a fraction of the mess & hassle, of traditional building methods.
